SunnyBoy - Angelo

Hungarian radio host and DJ, Pataki Sándor also known as SunnyBoy is out with a new release on ARC Records. Angelo is the title of his first single and also the title of the first release from our own Sergio Yashin known as simps0n in the forums.

The original version is the Motel Synth George Remix (MSG) which is a project originally started in 2008 by Luc Trombini and Sergio Yashin as a tribute to Hotel Saint George. The project is now a solo project managed entirely by Yashin. Though this track in the intro of the Extended version clearly stole elements from “Hotel Saint George – Naked On The Sand” (HSG) it does not really have much else to do with HSG besides the genre, even though MSG was meant, originally, as a tribute to HSG. However, there are both good and bad sides about this fact. Generally copying other artist’s styles should be considered very uncreative, but on the other hand the track could have been of better production quality if the actual HSG-style was used. Nonetheless Sergio Yashin pulls this off in a decent remix with good ideas, though not taking full advantage of the potential.

Sicilian group SicuLand consisting of producers Paolo Miceli and Luca Di Bella delivers a considerably better remix. Gone is the ‘messy’ sound and in is pure italo sound anno 2010. The track actually has all the classic elements and a very straight forward build up in a remix that quickly lead your thoughts to Southern Europe. The SicuLand remix of Angelo is strikingly similar to the SicuLand remix of Italian Rockaz single “il Mio Amore” which ruins the fact that this is a great remix a bit. Though it might not be the most original remix, the recipe still works very well and they definitely took advantage of the potential MSG put into the melodic part.

Lastly is the remix of Danish producer and part of duo Disc Jockeyz, Brian Sanders who nowadays mostly produces remixes. After several amazing productions under the Disc Jockeyz name, Brian apparently changed to a more experimenting style with the Luna Felix project. Although it worked out decently in past Luna Felix remixes, a lack of inspiration clearly shines through in this remix. The bass is great, better than in any of the previous remixes, but suddenly a very distinctive bell sound hits your head. It wears off you think, it is just a gimmick, and fortunately it does wear off… only to come back in the chorus, unfortunately. (What happened Brian?). You do have moments, while listening, where you think it might turn out ok, and the build up to the chorus is actually very well made, but by the end of the 5:34 minutes it lasts, you sit back with a feeling of having listened to a bunch random ideas put together to a remix without critically considering how they would work together in the first place.

It is hard to convince anybody of the qualities in the voice of SunnyBoy, especially with its massive vocoding, but a catchy melody and a good filter can certainly save almost any voice nowadays. Actually this fact very much does save this release. The MSG remix might sound a bit messy but you can’t argue against a catchy melody, and it most certainly does not get worse with the SicuLand remix. Basically Motel Synth George made potential, SicuLand used the potential and Luna Felix spoiled it.

VERY Nice review CFE, pleasure to read it Laughing out loud I agree on most of the point Smile
I'll point out the fact that Serg entirely REMADE the acapella and made Sunnyboy actually SING, since the original vocal is one of the worse ever Wink
